Just when Liz is most desperate for support and nurturing, her parents desert her.Īcross the street another drama is unfolding. The tension around this erupts into fierce arguments between Liz's mother and father, and their eventual separation. Liz's father never had a good experience with organized religion anyway, but this spiritualist church sends him over the edge, especially when Liz goes along to services too. Almost worse is that Liz's mother has become impossibly crippled by grief: she is withdrawn, angry, and now caught up in a strange spiritualist church where she believes her dead mother (Liz's grandmother) speaks to her. The narrator, Liz, has just suffered the death of her energetic, loving grandmother, which is difficult. We look forward to Wittlinger's novels, and this one is outstanding.

I am reading them abridged classics right now every night and this one we just finished. " My kids loved it when I read this one to them. " Although it was great, I didn't really enjoy the story line as much as I usually do with most classics. Overall Performance: Narration Rating: Story Rating:.Oliver has such a kind heart, and given all the crap that he went through in life, it was so lovely to see him happy, loved, and well cared for in the end. "I think this is my favorite Dickens so far (although I did really like Little Dorrit, too). It features some of his most vital characters, from the diabolical Fagin to the murderous Bill Sikes and his mistress Nancy, whose love for Oliver is both her redemption and her downfall. This adaptation of Dickens' second novel is a moving tale of innocence and corruption. His subsequent rescue, by the kindly Mr Brownlow, is only the beginning of a series of adventures that lead him to an incredible discovery. This novel is filled with realistic depictions of England and wonderful characters that add depth and complexity to the story. Susan Rowland’s suspenseful and surprising writing keeps Massacre of the Holy Ghost gripping from start to finish. The Sacred Well Murders by Susan Rowland a Contemporary Whodunit Review LINK: The Sacred Well Murders by Susan Rowland a Contemporary Whodunit Review Murder at Holy Well is a suspenseful novel set in England, starring beloved detective Kate Williams. The book opens with the discovery of a corpse in a sacred well of a country. Kate, her friend Mrs. Barbara came to see the mansion, became interested in the problem and decided to investigate. They attended evenings hosted by the notorious Eusapia Palladino, a medium who was popular among the intellectuals in Paris. Marie and Pierre, along with many other scientists and great thinkers of their day, were intrigued by psychics and seances. The matter actually led to several duels.īut I was particularly fascinated to learn about the Curies' earlier connection with the occult. Her fellow scientists - many of whom had no problem with extra-marital dalliances on the part of male colleagues, such as Einstein - wrote advising Curie to decline her invitation to Stockholm to accept her second, solo, Nobel Prize. The most dramatic involved her affair after Pierre's untimely death in a horse carriage accident, and the problems it caused in her professional life. (She and Pierre also won the prize in physics, in 1903.) As a biography, * Radioactive *makes the already exciting life of Marie Curie even more exciting, relaying aspects of Curie's life that most of us have never heard about. It is, of course, the 100th anniversary of Marie Curie's Nobel Prize in Chemistry. It's a combination that lifts the book above either graphic novel or artbook to create something new and exciting. In Radioactive, Redniss has made the narrative part of the picture, and used images to comment on, as well as illustrate, the story. It had also been described as an art book. When I first heard of Radioactive: A Tale of Love and Fallout by Lauren Redniss, it was billed as a graphic novel about Marie and Pierre Curie. And, as in many Austen novels, the sisters are plagued by gossipy neighbors and selfish in-laws, but through it all they manage to handle challenges with grace and humor. As they find love, lose it, and find it again, sentimental Marianne learns the value of restraint, and sensible Elinor discovers that composure melts in passion's flame. 'Sense and Sensibility' has been directed by Ang Lee ('The Wedding Banquet,' 'Eat Drink Man Woman'), who is from Taiwan, and whose choice for this assignment has been questioned. Despite their marked temperamental differences, Marianne and Elinor are devoted to one another. This is a trying task, however, since Elinor (Emma Thompson) falls for a young man who is previously engaged, and Marianne ( Kate Winslet) is literally swept off her feet by a handsome rogue. They retreat to a little cottage by the sea and hope to marry well. Sensible Elinor and sensuous Marianne are left impoverished after their father's death because the law awards their estate to a half-brother. Directed by Ang Lee, Emma Thompson's adaptation of the Jane Austen novel follows the Dashwood sisters as they try to redeem a lost fortune by marrying well and end up finding love.
